Below is a listing of some specific issues and solutions for them.

Smitfraud Trojan - Restoring the taskbar, start menu, and Internet Explorer - Added 7/2/05 3:00PM

Problem: After cleaning the smitfraud trojan infection with McAfee or Kaspersky, explorer.exe and iexplore.exe won't run without being renamed. The task bar and start menu aren't present after booting. Windows XP repair installation does not complete successfully but rather locks up near the end. When trying to run explorer from the task manager, you get the error "The system cannot find the file c:\windows\explorer.exe."

Here's how to fix this issue:

1. CTRL-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager.
2. Click File | New Task(run).
3. Type regedit in the Run box and click OK.
4. Browse to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options

5. Under this key there will be subkeys named explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe. Delete the explorer and iexplorer keys entirely. They should not be listed under the Image File Execution.Options key.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. Restart the computer.

Assuming no other viruses / adware / spyware / malware are interfering, the Windows desktop should load fine now.
Update 2/9/06: SmitRem may also be helpful to more automatically remove smitfraud.

lsass.exe - not enough quota - added 7/29/05 6:00PM

When repairing or installing Windows XP, you get the message "Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available..." very briefly and then the computer reboots. This happens in normal and in safe modes, and continues to happen after attempting to repair windows too.

Solution: It is recommended to do a full system backup first using a drive imaging program such as Norton Ghost. Boot the computer using the Windows XP CD into recovery mode (press R). Copy all files from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32\config one by one. If it asks if you want to overwrite say yes. Reboot and the system should come up again.

Altnet Registry Remnants Removal - added 2/9/06 2:20PM

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard\Settings

The above registry keys cannot be deleted or removed by any antispyware software. Change permissions on the highest level key first, and then each subkey in succession. Run regedt32.exe and right click on each key and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. When all the permissions have been changed then try deleting each entry again in reverse order, starting with all the subkeys and moving your way up. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor. If it's still giving you problems, try deleting them in Safe Mode (or even another user account).
